China Angry at Chen

China got angry at Taiwan leader--Chen Shui-Bian who de-continued the function of National Unification Council of Taiwan.

Chinese President
Hu Jintao on Tuesday slashed the decision of Taiwan authorities to cease the function of "National Unification Council" and the application of its guidelines, saying it is a "dangerous step" toward "Taiwan Independence."

"Despite the strong opposition within and outside of the island, the Taiwan authority went its own way and decided to cease the function of 'National Unification Council' and the application of its guidelines," Hu said.

"It's a grave provocation to the one-China policy universally adhered to by the international community and to the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits," he said. (link)

At the same time, China reaffirms commitments to Taiwan compatriots.

"We'll promote cross-Straits personnel exchanges and economic and cultural exchanges and advance the process of direct links of mail, shipping and trade," said a statement jointly issued by the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.

It said the mainland will work with Taiwan compatriots to safeguard and promote the peaceful and steady development of cross-Straits relations and to strive for peaceful reunification.

"We resolutely oppose 'Taiwan independence' and will never allow 'Taiwan independence' secessionist forces to secede Taiwan from the motherland under any name or by any means," the statement said. (link)
