Older-than-dinosaur Freshwater Jellyfish Discovered at Nanchang University

freshwater jellyfish in Nanchang University A freshwater jellyfish (not true jellyfish but hydrozoan) older than dinosaurs were discovered when students of life sciences major from Nanchang University were searching for mayfly on the university's Shuangfeng Lake. The lower animal belongs to craspedacusta, which dates back some 650 million years.

Researchers analysed water samples and learned it was free of toxins and clean enough to support the craspedacusta, which prefers a water temperature less than 35 degrees Celsius.

A craspedacusta has a very simple body and is reckoned as a "living fossil", valuable for studying biological evolution.
