World's Longest Span Cable-stayed Bridge

World's longest cable-strayed bridgeThe Sutong bridge claimed to be the world's longest span cable-stayed bridge to date has been connected on Monday, June 18, 2007. The bridge linking Suzhou and Nantong in east China's Jiangsu Province will become part of China's key trunk route planned by the Ministry of Communications from Jiayin in Helongjiang province to Nanping in Fuijang province.

Once completed, the bridge will create four new world records for cable-stayed bridges: its 1,088m span will be the longest (usurping the previous record holder, the Tatara Bridge in Japan, which has a main span of 890 meters); the 306m-high main bridge tower will be the highest; the two foundation piers of the main bridge will be the deepest; and the longest stay of the main bridge will also the longest in the world, so far, at 580m.

The bridge was started to be constructed in June 2003 and scheduled to be finished in 2009.
