Thai Poisonous Puffer Fish Sold as Salmon Kills 15

Thai Poisonous Puffer Fish Sold as Salmon Kills 15 Dishonest Thai vendors have been selling meat from the highly poisonous puffer fishpuffer fish disguised as salmon and killed more than 15 people and poisoned a further 115 over the past three years in Thailand.

Puffer fish known as fugu in Japan or Hetun in China is considered an especial delicacy. But the ovaries, liver and intestines of the fish contained a toxin called Tetrodotoxintetrodotoxin (TTX) that is formally known as anhydrotetrodotoxin 4-epitetrodotoxin. Even small quantities of TTX can induce respiratory problems that can lead to death, and also there is currently no antidote to the toxin, so many countries have banned it sold on the market.

On the other hand, the puffer fish has led scientists to find an active ingredient of the poison called Tectintectin, a non-addictive pain-killing drug that is claimed to be some 3000 times stronger than morphine, with effects lasting between eight and 21 days, with no side effects.
